Obtrusive Sleep Apnea Syndrome is a sleeping disorder marked by repetitive episodes of cessation of breathing, 10 seconds or longer, during sleep. During this time, the individual’s oxygen level drops, resulting in hypoxemia and sleep disruption. SAS was clinically recognized more than 30 years ago, but the health implications of this syndrome were barely known outside of the medical field. However, as more cases were uncovered, attention turned to the impact of SAS on the general health of individuals, such as the increased risk of cardiovascular disease, along with its oral implications such as periodontitis.

Dental Hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental problems, most commonly, dental cavities, gingivitis, caries, periodontal (gum) diseases and bad breath. Track 16: Oral Cancer

Oral cancer often begins with an asymptomatic stage during which symptoms may not be obvious, it is often painless initially and therefore difficult to detect. Oral cancer treatment is usually successful when performed in the early stages, any abnormal change in the mouth, gums, tongue, or surrounding area should be evaluated by a dental professional immediately. A consistent buildup of plaque and tartar leads to oral cancer and Nutritional deficiencies implicated as risk factor Diet low in fruits & vegetables implicated in cancers of mouth, larynx, and esophagus. Track 17: Nutrition and Oral Health

Realization of Dental health is more important. In this nutrition plays a big role. Our diet influences how our teeth develop. What we eat plays a role in maintaining dental health. Proper nutrition means eating a well-balanced diet so that your body can get the nutrients needed for good health. If a low nutritious food is preferred, your mouth may have a more difficult time resisting infection. This may lead to periodontal disease, a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Although periodontal diseases are indirectly caused by poor nutrition, it is believed that the disease progresses faster causing severe complications in people with poor nutrient diets.

The potential cause of dental caries is the consumption of sugar-containing foods and drinks. Poor diet also affects immune system functioning and people with lowered immunity have been shown to be at increased risk of gum disease. The increased susceptibility to gum disease is likely due to a decreased ability to resists periodontal pathogens.

Dental biomaterials are specialized instruments that are designed to be used in dentistry. These are fabricated structures. Their focus is replacement and enhancement of missing tissues due to some disease or accidents and to restore its normal function.
