Oral Complications of Systemic Diseases

Oral cavity plays a major role in various physiologic procedures, including absorption, breath, and discourse. The mouth is often engaged with conditions that influence the skin; however, it is likewise influenced by numerous systemic infections. Signs of some systemic diseases are often manifested in the oral cavity even before the systemic disease itself is suspected. Some of the significant diseases which are indicated as having oral systemic connection are pulmonary disease, orthopedic implant failure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and kidney disease. Oral manifestations are also associated with problems encountered in fetal development. Periodontal disease and oral bacteria are suspected of being contributing factors to the worsening of chronic disease states.
